It's really sad, but I can spend a whole evening reading about this kind of weird stuff on the internet, usually American religious extremism, and in particular, Scientology.

I guess it's probably because I can't get my head around how people can become so brainwashed by books, which are completely fictitious, live their lives by them and believe that they'll be sent somewhere far greater when they die than everyone else, just by doing so. In this way I find that religion is purely selfish. Scientology is the most bizarre, for many reasons. To have to pay large sums of money to climb the levels in the religion (it is estimated that to reach one of the highest levels OT9, it would cost between $365,000 to $380,000) is utterly rediculous as an individual should not have to pay for a belief, living your life by a set of books including stories about time travel and aliens, whilst knowing the "founder" L. Ron Hubbard was a science fiction author is just plain stupid, forcing members to "disconnect" from their family and loved ones (formally, writing a letter to tell them that they are never going to see or talk to them purely because they do not believe in or are opposed to $cientology), the list goes on.

Scientology isn't about making money..
Oh yes, I almost forgot one of the other crazy, slightly frightening rules of Scientology, "Fair Game". An individual can be classed as fair game for numerous reasons, primarily being opposed to the "religion" or interfering with Scientology's actions. Fair Game is no longer officially in action, but is still followed.
"ENEMY — SP Order. Fair game. May be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed."
Frightening stuff. I've read about several deaths/murders directly caused by Scientology, one being a woman locked in a room and being starved to death because she apparently showed signs of psychological illness after being in a minor car accident. She was taken to hospital but later discharged, and then picked up by Scientologists who then took her to their hotel and locked her in a room for 17 days without food or water. Scientology is strictly against medicine and psychology, yet believes any illness can be cured by a session with an "auditor" (a Scientologist asking a series of short questions, obviously at a price).
